I recently helped a neighbor who bought an Apple iPad 1 running iOS 5.1.1 for his daughter so that she could watch Netflix. He was worried that he wasted his money because he was unable to install the Netflix App. When attempting to install the App from the App store, the install would not complete and said it wasn’t compatible with his version of iOS.

The solution was to login to iTunes with his Apple ID and then search for the Netflix app. Once we located the Netflix app, we clicked on the “Get” button. Netflix downloaded to iTunes on his computer.

We then returned to the iPad which is logged in with the same Apple ID and searched for Netflix in the App Store. This time, when we go to install the App, it says that an older version of the App is available and asks you if you’d like to install it. Press Yes and get ready to enjoy Netflix on your old Apple iPad 1 w/ iOS 5.1.1

Please note that you are NOT syncing the app from iTunes to the iPad. The iPad doesn’t need to be connected to the computer running iTunes for this to work. You will simply be given he option to download the older version of the App on the iPad 1 running iOS 5.1.1 after you’ve installed it in iTunes while logged into iTunes with your Apple ID.

So now that you’re enjoying Netflix on your iPad 1, what should you do now? Here is what you do – buy an Android or Windows tablet next time because they will automatically offer you the version of the App that IS compatible with your equipment.

I recently had the pleasure of trying to make the message indicator light work in several of our asterisk boxes for our Cisco phones. Chances are you may share the same frustration of trying to get this seemingly simple feature working.

So we will keep it very simple:

First off, I recommend firmware version 8.3.1. It’s the version we use and it seems to have the least bugs out of all the releases for these phones. Most new features seem to cater to Cisco CallManager features more than they do Asterisk, so let’s forget all about any versions after 8.3.1 for now!

Second, you will need to edit SEP$MAC.cnf.cml ($MAC being the mac address of your phone) and find the line that has this key:

<messageWaitingLampPolicy>0</messageWaitingLampPolicy>

You will want to change this to 1. There are more options that allow you to fine-tune this, however, I find this best. 1 will make the envelope blink next to the line that has a new voicemail, and will make that light shine so bright!

Now, we have one more step to make this work properly, which can be done two ways:

Edit sip_custom.conf and add the following line:

buggymwi=yes

Save the file, reload asterisk.

OR:

In FreePBX, click on the tools tab, go into SIP Settings (where you change up the NAT settings) and at the very bottom of the page, put in the above setting in the field for extra SIP options. Save, and reload.

You will almost immediately see a change if you already rebooted the phone, if not, well, reboot your phone!

Now go ahead and leave a voicemail and watch the indicator light up!

Some additional notes: You may notice a strange behavior where your dial tone will blip on and off when you start a new call if you have voicemail. This is intended and set as a default in some configs. If you find this annoying, go ahead and open up your SEP$MAC.cnf.xml file and find the following line:

<stutterMsgWaiting>1</stutterMsgWaiting>

and change it to 0. Reboot the phone, and the behavior should go away.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave a few comments.

As an ardent supporter of Windows, its subsceptability to malware attacks is still a sore black eye. Fortunately for me, I followed this advice to minimize the impact of a virus. Specifically – my account was a standard user account, not an administrative one. Read that article to learn more about how to use your Windows computer more securely.

“Your Computer has been locked!” – Fake FBI Warning

While browsing a website, my computer suddenly displayed this screen. My first reaction was “whatever, ALT+F4″ My next reaction was “oh – that didn’t work.” I have dual monitors, so one of them showed only my desktop background. The other showed this bogus message. I tried “CTRL+ALT+DEL” and then run task manager, but I would be returned to my blank desktop and this message. The message did exactly what it threatened to do, and it did it pretty well. I’ve been a computer network engineer for over a decade and this thing briefly left me feeling locked out… WOW

The message claims to be from the FBI warning that “The work on your computer has been suspended on the grounds of unauthorized cyberactivity.” The message further states “To unlock your computer and to avoid other legal consequences, you are obligated to pay a release fee of $200.” (OK thieves – at least be reasonable, and by the way I hope you die painfully for all the trouble you cause) The message advises you to go to your local 7-11, Rite Aid, Kmart, CVS, Walgreens or Walmart and pickup a “green dot MoneyPak” voucher.

This is (obviously) a fake message. The creator of this virus is dressing this scam up as an FBI enforcement warning when it’s really a trick to have you send them $200 bucks! This is a great specimen of “Ransomware” where a virus gets into your computer, locks your files or your access and then demands money to unlock your files or access to your computer. This type of ransomware has usually surfaced as fake anti-virus in the past. So incase you were on the way to the store to pick up a MoneyPak card, please don’t!

So now that you know this is a fake message and that your computer IS NOT LOCKED by the FBI, see our “Your Computer has been locked” virus removal guide. Our virus removal guide doesn’t require any downloads and doesn’t require you to purchase anything.

If you require further assistance, as always, feel free to call (888) 777-WURX. One of our engineers will be glad to help you rid yourself of this pesky virus for much less than the $200.00 the ransomware is asking for.

Microsoft Windows XP installations give your initial user accounts administrative access rights. As a computer administrator, you can change system files, install and remove software and modify settings. Computer Administrators can break and fix your computer. That is why we don’t want to run as an administrator all the time.

When we use the computer as an administrator (or an account with administrative privledges) you are more vulnerable to malware and viruses because the payload that malware contains will be able to execute as an administrator on your computer and do whatever it’s programmed to do.

To enhance the security of your computer against viruses and malware, change your own account type to limited, but only if there is another user on the computer with a computer administrator account. The computer cannot be without an administrator. You must use a computer administrator account to change a user’s account type. Your account is probably already an administrator account.

In Windows XP, after you have changed your user account to a Standard account, you will need to log off and back on as an administrator account whenever you want to install/remove/change software and system settings.

To make your Windows XP computer a lot more secure, do the following:

Open User Accounts - click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.

Click the name of the account you want to change. If there is only one account (your account), Add an account to be your new administrator account and make it an administrator account.

Click Change the account type on your day to day use user account.

Click Computer administrator or Limited, depending on the type of account you want, and then click Change Account Type.
